BMW Aisin Gearbox Service
The Aisin gearbox is an 8-speed automatic transmission was the first of its kind for BMW transverse engine applications.
It’s also known as the GA 8F 22AW for BMW.
The Aisin gearbox is used for lower torque applications, such as 4-cylinder engines. These are always front wheel drive or X-Drive (no Aisin equipped vehicles are rear wheel drive).
Aisin GA8F22AW transmission is fitted to 2 Series Models [2014-2020] F22, F23, F45, F46.
How do I know if my car has the Aisin gearbox?
If your vehicle has a transverse engine (fitted horizontally when looking under the bonnet) and is 8 speed, then you have the Aisen gearbox. Vehicles fitted with the 7 speed box are DCT.
When is maintenance required?
- Aisin (who manufactures the gearbox) recommends an oil change every 100,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first.
- We would recommend changes at 60,000 miles due to reliability issues that we have seen with this gearbox.
Why should I change the oil in the gearbox?
Gearbox oil doesn’t just lubricate the gearbox, it also performs several other important functions. During regular gearbox operation, wear is inevitable and the oil helps to carry away any contaminants from operational components.
Old and dirty oil can lead to overheating or clutch burn out, resulting in poor gear selection, loss of drive and ultimately transmission failure.
How to maintain it?
An oil change involves draining the gearbox, checking for leaks and replacing the oil with the correct manufacturer spec gearbox oil.
Does servicing the gearbox fix any problems I may have?
Sadly, no. If your gearbox has a issue, servicing will not resolve it.
Servicing is to be treated as preventive maintenance.
How long does it take and how much does it cost?
We require your vehicle for a working day to complete as the gearbox needs to be cold. The service cost of this gearbox is £355 inc VAT.
