BMW ISN Change for EGS Gearbox Mechatronic Units

When a gearbox fails, many customers opt for second-hand replacements due to the huge cost of genuine new parts. However, using a pre-owned automatic gearbox or Mechatronic control unit requires a specialised ISN clearing service to allow its use in another vehicle.

Understanding the ISN, what it does and why it is causing you trouble

The Mechatronic control unit is located within the automatic gearbox and is coded with a unique ISN (Individual Serial Number) as part of your BMW’s security system. This coding is done during production and is a one time write.

The CAS unit (security module) and engine control unit must have a matching ISN to allow the vehicle to start. These later automatic gearboxes also utilised this technology and without a matching ISN, the vehicle may start but the gearbox will not engage any gears and render the vehicle immobile. This system usually forces customers to purchase brand new replacements, increasing costs significantly.

  • Whole Car: We are happy to accept the whole car with the replacement gearbox already fitted (please make sure this is filled with oil and ready to drive once complete).
  • Gearbox / Mechatronic Only: For many 8-speed F-Series Mechatronic units, we offer a bench “virginisation” or cloning process. This prepares the unit for installation without requiring the vehicle. The unit can then be fitted and coded with either a factory BMW tool or Autologic system.
